Five months ago, I met Martha while doing outreach and reporting illegal dumping. She was living on a dirt road along Athens Way & 130th. An area forgotten by the county, the railroad & an energy company. For over 4 years this problematic location was a constant source of illegal activity. If you're not familiar with the area, I would encourage you to take a drive.
Today, December 19th Martha received keys to her first apartment in 10 years. We were on hand to celebrate the handing over of the keys. Tonight, Martha will sleep in warmth and comfort. She will be safe.
Martha just needed someone she could trust and would go through the process with her. Getting her to this stage was difficult and took work. I attended court sessions with her and ensured the street medical teams met with her.
Martha is one of many that we have assisted from our streets to shelter to getting keys to their own place. Our streets in the community of Harbor Gateway, Unincorporated LA County areas of Rosewood, West Rancho Dominguez, East Gardena and Rancho Dominguez have been our focus. I am thankful to the team at the WLCAC, LAHSA, HOPICS and LASD HOST. Our law enforcement agencies have been incredibily supportive of the work being done throughout the area.
This is Athens Way and 130th in the Unincorporated LA County Area of Rosewood. This is what Martha and others had been living.
